Our Ministries

Our doors are open to anyone in need of a place to worship, a helping hand or a friendly face.

We especially welcome our neighbors in the Crestview and Brentwood neighborhoods — also known as the Violet Crown community. Stop by for a visit. Rest in the shade of our gazebo on Woodrow Avenue, or walk the labyrinth on the north side of the chapel.

We share our beautiful sanctuary, chapel, gymnasium and meeting facilities with organizations whose mission is compatible with our mission: childcare organizations, Christian congregations for whom English is a second language, music education and music therapy groups, and 12-step organizations, to name a few. Some of the ministries at First Cumberland include:

Mission Outreach

Their name says it all! Mission Outreach is a team of volunteers from the congregation who practice membership care, outreach and visitor follow-up. These volunteers also coordinate the recording ministry and assist with church office work.

Open Door Ministry

Almost every day, someone or something comes through the door with a need that we try to meet. Open Door Ministry matches the need with a resource available from the greater Body of Christ in Austin, whether it’s a prayer concern, a referral to support services or a need for basic food and clothing.

Puerta del Cielo and Puerta de Esperanza

We are pleased to share our sanctuary with Puerta del Cielo, which holds services at 1 PM on Sundays, and our chapel with Puerta de Esperanza, which conducts services at 7 PM on Sundays.

We welcome several 12-step groups that meet weekly at First Cumberland:

DAA -- Tuesday, 7:00 p.m., Estes Hall
OA -- Wednesday, 8:00 p.m., Estes Hall
OA -- Friday, 12 noon, Conference Room
DA -- Friday, 6:30 p.m., Estes Hall
AA -- Saturday, 9:00 a.m., Estes Hall

Message From the Pastor

The program of our congregation is people.  This is the way it is in a small-member family church.  Whatever the people are needing is a focus of our congregation.  We worship together and share a luncheon once a month enjoying the fellowship in the name of Christ.  We support each other in a time of death.  We walk the labyrinth at the north end of our church campus.  We make repairs to the church when needed, and soon we will have our parking area redone, and our north doors replaced. Together we have developed a mission outreach event in which a number of our people share.  Many of us are neighbors to our area neighbors and to the organizations who work under the umbrella of our building. Some of these are The Center for Music Therapy, Health for a Song, the Music School with three teachers, four twelve-step groups and the Film Kids.

As a people, we cherish our relationship with two congregations who worship in our space: Puerta del Cielo and Puerta de Esperanza.

The leaders of our congregation are called The Session.  Our Ruling Elders are the pastor, Ruth Gardner, Jerry Cox, Bill Ambrose, Nick Hadden and Katie Pace.

We are a congregation with a long history of service to Austin.  We have been around for over 150 years.  The former church building was downtown and moved here to it’s new place.  The change happened in 1956.  The stained glass windows in the present sanctuary came from the former building and were made in Germany.  The present sanctuary is an acoustical wonder used by many music teachers and students.

Many of our people share music together.  We have a growing adult choir and our youth are being taught the use of chimes and will be performing soon in worship.  Our Music Director is Katja Lindner.

Serving as our Commissioned Outreach Worker is Katie Pace.

Our people have the opportunity to serve Christ on one of six committees: Music and Worship, Christian Education, Finance and Maintenance, Hospitality and Nominating.

Our congregation has a new relationship with Right Now Media, a company that provides three digital libraries which provide many choices that can deepen our relationship with our Christ.  If you are interested, please call Pastor Stevenson to get connected to this service.  A dozen of our people have signed on.

My vision for our congregation includes the following: continuing evangelical mission outreach to our neighborhoods; supporting the groups who use our building through out the week; a chancel choir of ten members; enhancing of learning through our relationship with Right Now Media; and a congregational membership of 75 by the end of 2016.

Our church officers and members invite you to come celebrate life, love and God.  We seek to be refreshed by your life among us and that you experience the same with us.  There are three ways to become a member here: a profession of your faith in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior; reaffirmation of your faith in Christ; or a transfer of membership from the church where you are presently a member.

We worship each Sunday at 10:30 AM. We have a Discipleship Class at 9:30 AM. A nursery is provided.

As pastor, I am available to all members and friends of the church. I may be reached at the church at 512-453-8434 or at home, 512-458-5072, or by email, ronald-stevenson@att.net. The church email is cpaustin@prodigy.net.

Grace and peace,
Pastor Ron Stevenson
